I’m thinking of an old board game I used to have that involved a brace type thing that you could put a wet paper towel on and then each player takes a turn putting a marble onto the paper towel until it broke?

No, Don’t Break The Ice had hammers and a bunch of plastic ice blocks you had to remove without “Breaking The Ice”!!

The game you are looking for is Thin Ice. BoardGameGeek.com entry for Thin Ice –> http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/13208. In Thin Ice, players added marbles to a dampened paper towel until one player adds the marble that causes the whole thing to tear.
