Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams

Bioshock was Take Two Interactive’s mega hit video game. Over two million copies of it were sold. Most die hard gamers are probably familiar with Bioshock’s undersea world of Rapture, which is a bit reminiscent of the lost city of Atlantis legends. The Little Sisters and the Big Daddys of Bioshock were unforgettable.

Bioshock lived up to at least half of its name, since we were all shocked to see a trailer for Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams. If you’re a gamer, you probably heard of and maybe even saw the Bioshock 2 video game trailer that was accidentally released a little while back. After all, it can be heard to avoid seeing video game trailers sometimes, especially one that has stirred up as much excitement as this one.

Unfortunately, the accidental release of the trailer sparked a lot of rumors. It’s given us all a lot to wonder about and talk about. So let’s try to set the record straight on a few things.

First of all, Bioshock 2 has been officially announced. It’s set to be released in 2009, although the exact month is unclear. So, yes, the trailer was legitimate and yes, the release rumors are true.

Another rumor is about what systems Bioshock 2 will come out for and when. Well, the official word is that it will come out for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Rumors seem to have it that the Xbox and PC versions will be first, with the PS3 version coming out later down the line, but nobody seems quite sure of the exact details.

The really big buzz, though, is about whether Sea of Dreams will be a prequel or a sequel to Bioshock. Most of the debate comes from the trailer. It seems to show an older version of one of the Little Sisters standing on a beach holding a doll that looks similar to a Big Daddy. Then, all of a sudden, a city grows out of the sand. To a lot of people that screams sequel. It looks like the Little Sister is dreaming of recreating a city, like Rapture, out of the sand.

On the other hand, though, some Bioshock fans are speculating that the girl on the beach may actually be the original creator of Rapture. Who exactly she is is unclear, but the Sea of Dreams title and the trailer indicate that the girl is standing on the beach dreaming of creating a city. So, a lot of people think she is going to create Rapture itself, not another city.

Either theory seems to be possible. I’m not really sure it matters which one is right, honestly. My biggest concern is whether or not the game will live up tot he incredibly high standards set by the original Bioshock. After all, a lot of sequels aren’t as good as the original. Hopefully Sea of Dreams will live up to the Bioshock reputation, though. The entire release of Bioshock 2 is shrouded in rumor and mystery. So, it seems that we have just enough of a taste to leave us hungry for more. We’ll just have to wait a little longer to fill in the details. The anticipation is part of the fun of gaming, though!
